The maintained successor to Enhanced Media Library

Your media library already knows what is in every picture.

Five hundred photographs, described, named, filed and searchable in about four minutes. Alt text written for every one of them. Folders you read before a single file moves — and one click that puts it all back.

Free and GPL-licensed. The AI is optional and priced per picture.

The problem

You have four thousand files called IMG_4821.jpg

Nobody can find anything. Nobody wrote the alt text. Half of them are the same photo uploaded twice. And the folder plugin you tried keeps its folders in its own database tables, so the day you remove it, the structure goes too.

Migration

Your folders are ordinary WordPress categories

Not rows in a table we invented. They show up in the REST API, in exports, in every other plugin that understands categories — and they are still there the day you remove us.

Import them from FileBird, Folders, WP Media Folder, HappyFiles, Wicked Folders or Real Media Library, and take them with you if you leave.

What it does

One look at each picture. Four things come out of it.

One credit, one picture. Everything below comes out of that single credit.

Questions

The five people ask first.

No. Nothing to set up. Credits are included in Pro and you can buy more.

Processing pauses. Your library keeps working. Buy a pack or wait for the next year's allowance. No overage, ever.

Yes. The free version is the maintained plugin with everything the old one did.

To our processing service in the EU, for the seconds it takes to analyse them. They are not stored. See privacy.

VergeLabs uses taxonomies, not folders. Running both is not recommended, and VergeLabs will tell you if it detects one.

Folders, drag and drop, duplicate detection and the import tools cost nothing and always will. The AI is a separate purchase, priced per picture, and you can see exactly what a run will cost before you start it.

Features

Everything it does

Seven of them are worth a picture, with the numbers taken from a real library of 510 photographs. Folders, sorting, search, duplicates, galleries and import cost nothing and need no account — only reading an image costs a credit. The rest is listed underneath.

01 Folders Free

One file, two folders

Drag and drop, nested as deep as you like. Move files, move folders, rename in place. No page reload.

A file can be in two folders at once. Dragging moves it, Ctrl-drop files it in a second folder as well — one photo, in Products and in Autumn Campaign, without a second copy.

More than one tree over the same files. Clients, Projects, Usage rights: as many folder trees as the way you work needs.

Private folders. On a site where five people upload, a folder can belong to whoever made it and stay out of everyone else's sidebar.

Uploads land in the folder you have open. No second step, no tidying up afterwards.

Your whole structure as a spreadsheet. Export it to CSV, build two hundred folders in a text editor, read it back.

02 Alt text and titles 1 credit per image

Alt text and titles that know what the page is about

One credit reads one image and writes the alt text, caption, title and tags.

Knows the page it sits on: the keyphrase from Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress or AIOSEO
Written for screen readers, in your site's language
A field you filled in yourself is never touched

Caption Yours — never touched
Our refill programme started in 2024.
Title DSC_4822.jpg Everyday Cleanser Refill Bottle
Backlog · 500 images 8 at a time · 341 written · about 1 min left

Written for the person listening to it. One sentence, never empty, no “image of” to start, and nothing described that is not visible in the picture.

It reads the page, not just the picture. The page title, the focus keyphrase, the meta description and up to three related keyphrases, from all four major SEO plugins.

Precise, never stuffed. “Ripper graphic on an 8.0 maple deck” rather than “skateboard deck buy skateboards online”. Keyword-stuffed alt text is what those same SEO plugins penalise, and it is unusable to the person listening.

Titles as well as alt text. DSC_4822.jpg becomes “Red Synthesizer with Controls” in the media list — two to five words, title case, applied per file, to a selection, or to the whole library.

Your pages with a keyphrase come first. It starts with the images missing alt text on the pages your SEO plugin already scores, cornerstone and pillar pages ahead of the rest.

Your words, not generic ones. Tell it once what the site sells and the writing uses your trade's vocabulary and your product names.

It runs while you do something else. Eight images at a time, roughly four minutes for five hundred, and it carries on after you close the tab.

Nothing you wrote is overwritten, ever. It fills empty fields only, marks everything it wrote, and takes all of it back out in one click if you do not like it.

“Drop nature, I want buildings, split into modern and classic”

It proposes a folder structure and waits for you

Point it at an unsorted library and it shows the folders it would make — first.

Every folder named, counted, with a line saying why
Change it in plain words before a single file moves
By date and file type instead: free, no descriptions needed

You see the tree before it exists. Counts against every branch, a few thumbnails, and the reason those files are together.

Named after what is in them. Not “Folder 1” — “Landscape and nature”, 168 files.

Change it by saying what you want. “Drop nature, I want buildings, split into modern and classic” rewrites the proposal. Your library does not change until you accept it.

By date and file type, for nothing. A folder per year and month, built from what WordPress already knows. No key, no credits, no request leaves your site.

It only touches files nobody had filed. A library you organised by hand is left exactly as you left it.

Undo puts every file back. And anything you moved yourself in the meantime stays where you put it, and is reported.

04 Search Free

Find a picture by what it shows

Type what the picture shows. “Water at sunset” finds coastlines and beaches.

Not one of these files has “water” in its name — the match is against what the pictures show.

Matches meaning. The picture comes back even when none of your words appear anywhere in its caption.

Searches everything written about a file. Captions, titles, tags, the uploader, and every folder it is filed in.

More like this one. One click from any file, instantly, and no credit — it compares descriptions your library already holds.

Smart folders that answer a question. Unused media, missing alt text, large files, unattached and this month, sitting above your own folders and always up to date.

Used on. Which posts and pages actually use a file, before you touch it.

Bulk actions. Add a whole selection to a folder, a category or a tag — or take it out of one — from the list you are already looking at.

Apply the titles and alt text you have already paid for. Every empty alt field filled from the descriptions on record, and DSC_4822 replaced with a real title, across the library in one run.

Filing without the mouse. Select files, press M, type the first letters of a folder, press enter.

Everything is reversible. Every sort, import, title change and alt-text fill comes back out in one click, and anything you edited by hand is skipped.

FileBird's own data is untouched.

Seven plugins and a CSV. Detected automatically; you choose which one to read.

You see what it will do first. What it will create, and which folders will merge with ones you already have, before it runs.

Nothing at the other end is touched. The plugin you are leaving keeps all of its own data, so you can go back at any time.

Undo, from the same screen. One click puts your library back the way it was.

And leaving here is just as easy. Delete the plugin and your folders stay, because they are categories. A folder downloads as a ZIP, the whole tree as a CSV.

The rest of it Twenty smaller things, each of which someone has needed.
It works inside your page builder
The folder tree is in the media modal of Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, Beaver Builder, Brizy, Bricks, Oxygen and fourteen others, as well as the block editor.
A folder can be a gallery
Add it as a block, an Elementor, Divi or WPBakery element, or a shortcode. Put a new image in the folder and every page showing that gallery has it, with nothing re-edited.
Files are set aside, never deleted
A file you think you are done with leaves the library and stays on disk, working, for thirty days. There is no delete button in the feature at all.
One set of folders in every language
With Polylang or WPML, a translated image lands in the original's folders and the tree looks the same whichever language you are editing in.
Built for networks
Network activation provisions every site, including ones created later, and one licence key the whole network inherits.
It gets out of the way if it breaks
Two fatal errors in its own code within an hour and it stops loading its own features so the site comes back. No FTP client, no renamed folder.
Your filing is yours to keep
Folders are categories. Delete the plugin and they are still there, for a reinstall or for any other plugin that reads the same taxonomy.
Visible to everything else
Because folders are terms, the block editor, a headless front end, WP-CLI and any other plugin can read them through the REST API.
Filters where you actually need them
Type, date, author and every taxonomy you assign — in the grid, in the list, and in the media modal inside the editor.
Control over file types
Add, rename, allow or disallow a MIME type, and fold it into the library filters.
Keyboard and right-to-left
File with the M key and arrow through the folder list; every screen has a right-to-left stylesheet.
Type what you want done
“Move the screenshots into Products.” Four verbs are allowed — move, tag, rename, create — and delete is not one of them.
Uploads that file themselves
New uploads get a suggested folder. A folder only starts filing on its own once you have accepted its suggestions.
It tells you what to do first
One screen that knows what has been scanned, described and proposed, and turns that into the next sensible step.
Nothing leaves your site without a key
No request on page load, on upload or in the background. Demo mode writes captions locally so you can see how it works before paying for anything.
You pay for results, not attempts
Credits are prepaid, they do not expire while the licence is active, failed images are refunded, and at zero the work simply stops.
Fast on a library that is actually big
20,000 attachments: four queries and 46ms, and it stays flat from 200 folders to 2,000.
Checked against new releases nightly
Every new version of WordPress, PHP and the plugins this one integrates with is checked for the hooks we rely on, then installed on a staging site and run.
Ready to translate
All 1,060 strings are translatable, loaded from the plugin's own languages folder.
Nothing to build or maintain
Plain PHP and ES5. No compile step, no dependencies to keep updated.

Install VergeLabs Media Library and migrate from Enhanced Media Library

Time needed
Five minutes
Risk to your library
Nothing is deleted at any point

Before you start

  • Back up your site, or at least export your database. You won't need it, but it's what professionals do.
  • Note your WordPress version. VergeLabs needs WordPress 6.9 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer.

Install

1

Download the free plugin from the latest release on GitHub and upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. Pro buyers: the zip is on your account page. Once the WordPress.org listing is live, searching “VergeLabs Media Library” under Plugins → Add New works too.

2

VergeLabs appears under Settings → Media, in the same place your old settings lived.

Migrate from Enhanced Media Library

If Enhanced Media Library is active, VergeLabs shows a notice:

Enhanced Media Library detected. Import settings and taxonomies? Import Dismiss
Your screenshot · optional
1

Click Import. VergeLabs copies your media taxonomies, categories, filter settings, MIME type settings, ordering, and gallery options. Your media files and their assignments are untouched; they're WordPress terms, they stay where they are.

2

Review the summary. It lists what was imported and anything it skipped.

3

Deactivate Enhanced Media Library. Don't delete it until you've clicked through your library once. Then delete it.

If you don't see the notice, run it manually: Settings → Media → VergeLabs → Import

Check

Media → Library

Your categories filter shows the same options as before.

In a post

Add an image: the media popup shows your filters.

List view

Your columns and taxonomies are there.

If something looks off

Layout broken in WordPress 7

That's the bug in the old plugin. Deactivate it; VergeLabs alone fixes it.

A page builder's media popup shows no filters

Settings → Media → VergeLabs → Integrations, turn on that builder. Integrations are off by default so they can't conflict.

Still stuck

Settings → Media → VergeLabs → Tools → Safe mode. It keeps your taxonomies and turns off everything else. Then write to support with a screenshot; we answer within one business day.

Contact support

Uninstall

Deactivating keeps all your data. Deleting the plugin removes VergeLabs' own settings only if you tick “Remove all data on uninstall” under Tools. Your media categories are WordPress terms and are never deleted by VergeLabs.

After purchase you receive an email with your licence key. It's also in your account at vergelabs.nl/account under Licences.

Turn on AI features

Under Settings → Media → VergeLabs → AI. Every feature has its own switch.

No credits needed. On by default in Pro.

There is a Pause all AI button at the top of the page. It stops everything within seconds and holds until you press Resume.

What gets sent

For Describe and Search, a resized copy of the image (long side 1024 px) and its filename are sent to VergeLabs' processing service, analysed, and discarded. Titles and captions you already wrote are sent too, so results match your wording. Nothing else leaves your site.

Details on the privacy page.

Caps

Each site has a daily cap, default 2,000 images, so a runaway import can't spend your year's credits in an hour. Change it under AI → Limits.

Disconnect

Licence → Disconnect. AI features turn off; the plugin keeps working; your existing alt text stays.

How credits work

Short version: prepaid, capped, never a surprise.

Where credits come from

Yearly allowance

Every Pro plan includes 500 (one site), 1,500 (five sites) or 5,000 (agency). It refills on renewal. Unused allowance credits don't roll over.

Verified against the real things: Divi’s Folder gallery module rendering from a built page, and the SEO context live-checked against current Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress and All in One SEO releases.

Buy exactly the credits you need, 500 to 50,000, straight from your account — the card form comes to you, not the other way round. The price per credit drops at 2,000, 5,000 and 20,000, and when rounding up to a tier costs less, the extra credits are free.

New

A numbered invoice for every purchase, one-off credit top-ups included. Discount codes work in the cart and in the account, and a payment re-quotes live as you change the amount.

New

Your account, rebuilt: month-by-month usage, connected sites, a credit ledger, pro-rata plan switching, and sign-in that follows you across the whole site.

New

Write to support and the draft is prepared by an agent that first checks your licence’s real activity — what ran, when it stopped, what was refunded — before answering. No canned replies.

Watch

Every night an automated watch picks up new WordPress, PHP, plugin and theme releases, checks everything this plugin relies on, and upgrades a staging site — before any of it reaches yours.

3.14.0
A network, from A to Z
New

Multisite, from A to Z. Network activation provisions every site — including sites created later. One network-wide AI licence entered once, a per-site overview for the network administrator, and one site’s failure can never take the plugin down for the rest.

New

File without touching the mouse: press M with files selected and type the folder. Right-to-left stylesheets for every screen. Describing refuses to run on a staging copy unless you say otherwise.

The AI half grew up
New

The folder tree in twenty page builders’ media pickers — Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, Beaver Builder, Bricks, Oxygen, Breakdance, Avada and the rest.

New

Descriptions that know the page: the page’s title, focus keyphrase and meta description travel with the image, and a Fix-alt-text button targets exactly the pages your SEO plugin is marking down. One switch; off, nothing about your pages leaves the site.

New

Describe in the background: start a backlog run and close the tab. It carries on without you.

Faster

Search by meaning on a 20,000-image library: over five seconds down to under half a second. A hundred-image media listing: 630ms to 390ms.

New

Leaving is safe. Uninstalling keeps your folders and descriptions in WordPress’s own tables, ready for a reinstall — or a switch, if you turn it on, that removes every trace instead.

Troubleshooting

Enhanced Media Library not working in WordPress 7? Here's the fix

If your media library looks broken after updating to WordPress 7, and you use Enhanced Media Library, this is why and how to fix it in five minutes.

The short answer

Install VergeLabs Media Library, click Import, deactivate the old plugin. The free version fixes it — no purchase needed.

Migration guide

What's happening

Enhanced Media Library was last updated in July 2024 and tested up to WordPress 6.5. WordPress 7 changed the media library screens. The plugin's layout code no longer lines up: overlapping panels, filters that don't show, a sidebar covering files, and PHP 8 warnings in your logs. Its developer has not responded in the support forum since 2024, and the paid PRO version's update server has been down.

Nothing is wrong with your files. Your categories and taxonomies are WordPress terms; they're safe.

The fix

VergeLabs Media Library is a maintained fork of Enhanced Media Library. Same features, same settings, working on WordPress 7 and PHP 8. It imports your setup in one click.

1

Install VergeLabs Media Library from WordPress.org (Plugins → Add New → search “VergeLabs Media Library”).

2

Click Import when it detects Enhanced Media Library. Your categories, filters and settings come over.

3

Deactivate Enhanced Media Library. Check your library. Delete the old plugin.

The free version fixes the WordPress 7 problem. No purchase needed.

If you'd rather patch the old plugin

We published a compatibility patch, 2.9.5-fix, on GitHub. It fixes the layout and PHP 8 issues and changes nothing else. It's a stop-gap; the old plugin won't get further updates from anyone, so migrating is the better move.

PRO customers

If you paid for Enhanced Media Library PRO, the fix above still applies. PRO features (bulk categorise, gallery tools, category search) are in VergeLabs Pro, and old PRO customers get the first year for €19.

Enhanced Media Library alternatives: what to switch to

Enhanced Media Library organised the WordPress media library with categories, tags and filters for over a decade. It hasn't been updated since 2024, breaks in WordPress 7, and its developer has gone quiet. Here's what to switch to, depending on what you need.

If you want the same thing, maintained

VergeLabs

VergeLabs Media Library is a fork of Enhanced Media Library. Same taxonomies, filters, bulk edit and ordering; same settings screen; one-click import of your setup. Fixed for WordPress 7 and PHP 8. Free.

Pro adds what the old plugin never had: AI alt text, captions and tags on upload and in bulk, plain-language search, duplicate finder, bulk rename. Prepaid credits, capped. From €39 a year, €19 for the first year if you owned the old PRO.

Best for: everyone who liked Enhanced Media Library and doesn't want to redo their library.

If you want folders instead of categories

FileBird, Real Media Library, HappyFiles and WP Media Folder give you a folder tree in the sidebar. They're a different model: a file lives in one folder; with taxonomies a file can be in several categories. Moving from Enhanced Media Library to a folder plugin means rebuilding your organisation from scratch, and Enhanced Media Library's own docs recommend against running both.

Best for: sites that think in folders and don't need multi-category tagging.

If you only need alt text

AltText.ai, AutoAlt.ai, Alt Magic and similar tools write alt text and stop there. They don't organise your library.

Best for: sites that already have organisation sorted and only want accessibility and image SEO.

Migration in one click

Install VergeLabs Media Library, click Import, deactivate the old plugin. Nothing in your library is deleted at any point.

Privacy policy

Who we are

VergeLabs Media Library is made by Boetiek House S.L., Calle Fernando Fuentes 2, 38300 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Contact: privacy@vergelabs.nl.

What the free plugin does with your data

Nothing leaves your site. The free plugin stores its settings in your WordPress database and does not contact our servers.

What the Pro plugin sends, and when

Only when you connect a licence and enable AI features:

Licence check

Your site URL, licence key, plugin version, WordPress and PHP version. Used to activate and count sites.

Describe & search

A resized copy of the image (long side 1024 px), its filename, and any existing title, caption or alt text, plus your chosen language. Used to generate alt text, captions, tags and a search index.

Usage

Number of credits used per day per site. Used to show your balance and caps.

We do not send your posts, users, comments, or any other content.

Where it goes and how long it stays

Images and text are processed on servers in the European Union and deleted from our systems as soon as the result is returned. Processing takes seconds. We keep the results (alt text, tags, search index) only on your site. We keep usage counts and licence data for as long as your account exists, plus what tax law requires for invoices.

Sub-processors

We use [AI model provider] for image analysis, [Hosting provider] for our processing service, and [Payment provider] for payments. Their names and locations are listed at vergelabs.nl/subprocessors and we'll notify licence holders before adding one.

Legal basis

Performance of a contract with you (the licence), and legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and billed correctly.

Your rights

Access, correction, deletion, portability, objection, complaint to your supervisory authority. Write to privacy@vergelabs.nl. Deleting your account deletes licence and usage data within 30 days, except invoice records.

Your visitors

VergeLabs processes files in your media library, not your visitors' data. If those files contain personal data, you remain the controller; we act as your processor under the terms of service.

Changes

We'll date every version and email licence holders about material changes.

Terms of service

1
The software

The VergeLabs plugin is licensed under GPLv2 or later. You may use, modify and redistribute it under that licence. These terms cover the paid services around it: licence keys, updates, support, and the AI processing service.

2
Licences

A Pro or Agency licence gives you access to updates, support and the AI service for the number of sites in your plan for one year, renewing yearly until cancelled. A lifetime licence gives the same for one site without renewal, for as long as the service exists.

3
Credits

AI processing is prepaid. Included allowances refill on renewal and don't roll over. Purchased packs roll over while a licence is active. Credits are not money, are not refundable except as stated under Refunds, and stop processing at zero. We never bill overage.

4
Fair use and caps

Per-site daily caps apply. Automated abuse, resale of processing, or use for content that is illegal or infringes others' rights ends the licence without refund.

5
Support

Email support for licence holders, response target one business day, in English. We don't guarantee compatibility with every theme or plugin, but we test against the ones listed on the site and fix what we break.

6
Refunds

14 days from purchase, full refund if the software doesn't do what the site says, minus credits used. After 14 days, no refunds on the term already started; you may cancel renewal at any time.

7
Availability

The AI service is provided as is. We aim for uptime but don't guarantee it. If it's down, credits aren't consumed and your plugin keeps working without the AI features.

8
Data

See the privacy policy. Where you upload files containing personal data, you're the controller and we process on your instructions; a data processing agreement is available on request.

9
Changes

We may change prices and terms for future terms with 30 days' notice by email. Current terms stay for the term you've paid.

10
Liability

To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to the amount you paid in the last 12 months. Nothing limits liability for fraud or where the law forbids it.

11
Law

These terms are between you and Boetiek House S.L., trading as VergeLabs. Spanish law, courts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, without affecting consumer rights that apply where you live.
