Run for real

A shop library of 43 camera-named files.

Every title, alt text, folder and search hit on this page is what the plugin wrote about them.

What it does for your library

Describe · 1 credit

Alt text for every picture you have.

One read writes the alt text, the title and what it saw, in your site's language. Run it on the whole backlog while you do something else. Your own alt text is never overwritten.

See how it reads

Folders you approve before anything moves

You build the tree, or take it from your shop's product categories. It places every picture, says why, and one click puts it all back.

How filing works

Search by what the picture shows

Type "things made of clay" and get the mugs, though no file name or description says clay. The reading was paid for once, so searching is free.

No tables of our own

Your folders are ordinary WordPress categories.

They show up in the REST API, in exports, and in every other plugin that understands categories. They are still there the day you remove us.

Import them from other folder plugins, and from CSV, and take them with you if you leave.

Tested on every release.

WordPress 6.5 to 7.1, PHP 7.4 to 8.5. It adds its own panels to the media library and never rewrites it.

One shop library, run through it for real.

Forty-three photographs, uploaded under camera file names like IMG_5104.jpg, then described, filed, searched and scanned by the plugin. The numbers below are that run.

A backlog nobody had written a word for

Every picture came in with no title and no alt text. One press started the run; it worked through the library in the background.

The one byte-for-byte copy was recognised and not read or charged twice.

How credits work

42credits

for 43 files: alt text, a title and what it saw for every picture.

The copy cost nothing. At zero credits, processing stops; it never charges you afterwards.

A pasted tree, filled by the pictures themselves

Nine folders pasted in as a list. Each picture was placed by what it shows, and says why it is where it is.

Where two folders scored too close, it left the picture where it was and said so.

freed by the one exact copy, with thirty days to bring it back.

Runs on your own server. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions people ask first.

Do I need an API key?

No. Paste the licence key and it works. Thirty seconds, no account to create.

What happens when credits run out?

Processing stops. It never charges you afterwards.

Can I keep using the free version forever?

Yes. Folders, drag and drop, duplicate detection and the import tools cost nothing and always will.

Where do images go?

Only when you describe them: a downsized copy goes through our service to a model provider, by way of OpenRouter in the United States, and is discarded when the answer comes back. We do not store it, and every request asks for providers that keep no data. The region the model runs in is not fixed. Who processes what.

Does it work with folder plugins like FileBird?

It imports their folders as ordinary WordPress categories.

Everything it does

7 tools, each with a real picture4.1.0 current release1 credit to describe a picture
01 Folders Free

Folders in the media library, kept as categories

A real folder tree over your library. Drag files in, done.

✓In the grid, the block editor and the media modal of twenty page builders
✓Folders are WordPress categories — they show in the REST API and exports
✓Delete the plugin and your structure stays

Drag and drop, nested as deep as you like. Move files, move folders, rename in place. No page reload.

A file can be in two folders at once. Dragging moves it, Ctrl-drop files it in a second folder as well — one photo, in Products and in Autumn Campaign, without a second copy.

More than one tree over the same files. Clients, Projects, Usage rights: as many folder trees as the way you work needs.

Private folders. On a site where five people upload, a folder can belong to whoever made it and stay out of everyone else's sidebar.

Uploads land in the folder you have open. No second step, no tidying up afterwards.

Your whole structure as a spreadsheet. Export it to CSV, build two hundred folders in a text editor, read it back.

02 Alt text and titles 1 credit per image

Alt text and titles that know what the page is about

One credit reads one image and writes the alt text, caption, title and tags.

✓Knows the page it sits on: the keyphrase from Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress or AIOSEO
✓Written for screen readers, in your site's language
✓A field you filled in yourself is never touched
Backlog · 500 images 8 at a time · 341 written · about 1 min left

Written for the person listening to it. One sentence, never empty, no “image of” to start, and nothing described that is not visible in the picture.

It reads the page, not just the picture. The page title, the focus keyphrase, the meta description and up to three related keyphrases, from all four major SEO plugins.

Precise, never stuffed. “Ripper graphic on an 8.0 maple deck” rather than “skateboard deck buy skateboards online”. Keyword-stuffed alt text is what those same SEO plugins penalise, and it is unusable to the person listening.

Titles as well as alt text. DSC_4822.jpg becomes “Red Synthesizer with Controls” in the media list — two to five words, title case, applied per file, to a selection, or to the whole library.

Your pages with a keyphrase come first. It starts with the images missing alt text on the pages your SEO plugin already scores, cornerstone and pillar pages ahead of the rest.

Your words, not generic ones. Tell it once what the site sells and the writing uses your trade's vocabulary and your product names.

It runs while you do something else. Eight images at a time, roughly four minutes for five hundred, and it carries on after you close the tab.

Nothing you wrote is overwritten, ever. It fills empty fields only, marks everything it wrote, and takes all of it back out in one click if you do not like it.

03 Sorting Pro · 10 or 30+ credits

You build the folder tree. It fills it.

Paste your folders, take them from your shop’s product categories, build them by hand, or let it propose a structure (10 credits) — then it files every picture and tells you how many before you press.

✓Every folder counted before anything moves, and one click puts it all back
✓A shop starts from its own product categories: one press, and the products place their own pictures
✓Plan my folders builds the tree from what your pictures show: 30 credits plus 15 per 100 labels, the price on the button
✓Every picture says why it is there: the folder, the word that matched, and what it nearly went to instead

You see the tree before it exists. Counts against every branch, a few thumbnails, and the reason those files are together.

Named after what is in them. Not “Folder 1” — “Landscape and nature”, 168 files.

Change it by saying what you want. “Drop nature, I want buildings, split into modern and classic” rewrites the proposal. Your library does not change until you accept it.

Plan my folders, priced on the button. It builds a tree from every label recorded about your pictures: 30 credits plus 15 per 100 distinct labels, and at least five described pictures. A plan that isn't shown (it doesn't beat your folders, it doesn't arrive, or you confirm your tree while it runs) has its credits refunded, once per site every 30 days. A plan that fails on our side is always refunded. Once you confirm a tree, new folders for new pictures cost nothing. Profiling a confirmed tree is free for the first 100 folders, then 1 credit per 6 folders.

It only touches files nobody had filed. A library you organised by hand is left exactly as you left it.

Undo puts every file back. And anything you moved yourself in the meantime stays where you put it, and is reported.

04 Search Pro · 0 credits

Find a picture by what it shows

Type what the picture shows. “Water at sunset” finds coastlines and beaches.

✓No filename has to contain the word — the match is against the image
✓Searches captions, tags, filenames and uploader too
✓Costs nothing: the reading was paid for once, at describe time

Matches meaning. The picture comes back even when none of your words appear anywhere in its caption.

Searches everything written about a file. Captions, titles, tags, the uploader, and every folder it is filed in.

More like this one. One click from any file, instantly, and no credit — it compares descriptions your library already holds.

Smart folders that answer a question. Unused media, missing alt text, large files, unattached and this month, sitting above your own folders and always up to date.

Used on. Which posts and pages actually use a file, before you touch it.

05 Duplicates Free

The same photo, uploaded four times

The same photo, found twice — exact copies and near-copies, listed apart.

✓Byte-identical re-uploads, and the same shot at another size
✓Each copy shows what still uses it
✓Nothing is deleted at any point

Exact and visually similar, kept apart. Two lists, because “identical” and “looks the same” are not the same claim.

The disk cost in plain figures. Keep one, tidy the rest, and see how much comes back.

Every copy shown, with where it is used. Before anything happens to any of them.

Tidied means set aside, not deleted. The file stays on disk at the same URL for thirty days, still working in any page you had not spotted. One click brings it back.

Links follow the copy you kept. Post content, featured images, builder layouts, ACF fields and WooCommerce galleries are all repointed.

06 Bulk editing Free

Fix one title, or fix a thousand

Fix a title or alt text in the row — one file, a selection, or all of them.

✓Quick edit in the media list, no round trips
✓One run over the whole library
✓Undoes in one click

Quick edit, in the row. Title and alt text, saved without a page load, and the row updates with what you wrote.

Bulk actions. Add a whole selection to a folder, a category or a tag — or take it out of one — from the list you are already looking at.

Apply the titles and alt text you have already paid for. Every empty alt field filled from the descriptions on record, and DSC_4822 replaced with a real title, across the library in one run.

Filing without the mouse. Select files, press M, type the first letters of a folder, press enter.

Everything is reversible. Every sort, import, title change and alt-text fill comes back out in one click, and anything you edited by hand is skipped.

07 Migration Free

Bring your folders across from the plugin you use now

Your folders come across from other folder plugins — or a CSV — in minutes.

FileBird's own data is untouched.

Other folder plugins and a CSV. Detected automatically; you choose which one to read.

You see what it will do first. What it will create, and which folders will merge with ones you already have, before it runs.

Nothing at the other end is touched. The plugin you are leaving keeps all of its own data, so you can go back at any time.

Undo, from the same screen. One click puts your library back the way it was.

And leaving here is just as easy. Delete the plugin and your folders stay, because they are categories. A folder downloads as a ZIP, the whole tree as a CSV.

The rest of it Twenty smaller things, each of which someone has needed.
It works inside your page builder
The folder tree is in the media modal of twenty page builders, as well as the block editor. Six are verified in a browser (Elementor, WPBakery, Beaver Builder, Brizy, Zion and Divi 5); the rest are best effort.
A folder can be a gallery
Add it as a block, an Elementor, Divi or WPBakery element, or a shortcode. Put a new image in the folder and every page showing that gallery has it, with nothing re-edited.
Files are set aside, never deleted
A file you think you are done with leaves the library and stays on disk, working, for thirty days. There is no delete button in the feature at all.
One set of folders in every language
With Polylang or WPML, a translated image lands in the original's folders and the tree looks the same whichever language you are editing in.
Built for networks
Network activation provisions every site, including ones created later, and one licence key the whole network inherits.
It gets out of the way if it breaks
Two fatal errors in its own code within an hour and it stops loading its own features so the site comes back. No FTP client, no renamed folder.
Your filing is yours to keep
Folders are categories. Delete the plugin and they are still there, for a reinstall or for any other plugin that reads the same taxonomy.
Visible to everything else
Because folders are terms, the block editor, a headless front end, WP-CLI and any other plugin can read them through the REST API.
Filters where you actually need them
Type, date, author and every taxonomy you assign — in the grid, in the list, and in the media modal inside the editor.
Control over file types
Add, rename, allow or disallow a MIME type, and fold it into the library filters.
Keyboard and right-to-left
File with the M key and arrow through the folder list; every screen has a right-to-left stylesheet.
Type what you want done
“Move the screenshots into Products.” Four verbs are allowed — move, tag, rename, create — and delete is not one of them.
Uploads that file themselves
New uploads get a suggested folder. A folder only starts filing on its own once you have accepted its suggestions.
It tells you what to do first
One screen that knows what has been scanned, described and proposed, and turns that into the next sensible step.
The AI features do nothing without a key
No picture is described on upload or in the background, and nothing is filed, searched by meaning or planned. Demo mode writes captions locally so you can see how it works before paying for anything. The Get help form is the one thing that works without a key, and it says what it sends before you send it.
You pay for results, not attempts
Credits are prepaid, they do not expire while the licence is active, failed images are refunded, and at zero the work simply stops.
Fast on a library that is actually big
20,000 attachments: four queries and 46ms, and it stays flat from 200 folders to 2,000.
Checked against new releases nightly
Every new version of WordPress, PHP and the plugins this one integrates with is checked for the hooks we rely on, then installed on a staging site and run.
Ready to translate
All 1,060 strings are translatable, loaded from the plugin's own languages folder.
Nothing to build or maintain
Plain PHP and ES5. No compile step, no dependencies to keep updated.

One credit describes one picture. Search costs nothing.

Install VergeLabs Media Library and migrate from Enhanced Media Library

Five minutes time neededNothing deleted at any point6.5 to 7.1 WordPress, 7.4 to 8.5 PHP

Before you start

  • —Back up your site, or at least export your database. You won't need it, but it's what professionals do.
  • —Note your WordPress version. VergeLabs runs on WordPress 6.5 to 7.1, PHP 7.4 to 8.5.

Install

1

Download the free plugin, version 4.1.0, from this page (a zip) and upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. Once the WordPress.org listing is live, searching “VergeLabs Media Library” under Plugins → Add New works too.

2

VergeLabs Library appears in the admin menu, with the Dashboard, Folders, AI, Duplicates and Import folders in its own navigation.

Migrate from Enhanced Media Library

When you activate VergeLabs, it copies your Enhanced Media Library settings by itself. There is nothing to click.

1

Activate VergeLabs Media Library. Your Enhanced Media Library settings are copied automatically. Your media files and their assignments are untouched; your categories are WordPress terms, so they stay where they are.

2

Open VergeLabs Library and look through your folders and settings.

3

Deactivate Enhanced Media Library. Don't delete it until you've clicked through your library once. Then delete it.

To bring folders across from another folder plugin, or from a CSV: VergeLabs Library → Import folders

Check

Media → Library

Your categories filter shows the same options as before.

In a post

Add an image: the media popup shows your filters.

List view

Your columns and taxonomies are there.

If something looks off

Layout broken in WordPress 7

That's the bug in the old plugin. Deactivate it; VergeLabs alone fixes it.

A page builder's media popup shows no filters

The folder tree is in twenty page builders, six of them verified in a browser. If yours is not one of them, write to support with its name and version.

Still stuck

Safe mode switches on by itself after two fatal errors in an hour. It keeps your taxonomies and turns off everything else. Write to support with a screenshot and the System report (VergeLabs Library → Settings → Media Utilities); we answer within one business day.

Contact support

Uninstall

Deactivating keeps all your data. Deleting the plugin keeps your folders too, because they are WordPress categories, unless you switch on Complete Cleanup: “Also remove all folders, settings and the AI index when the plugin is deleted”, under VergeLabs Library → Settings → Media Utilities. It is off by default.

Where your key is

After purchase you receive an email with your licence key. It's also in your account at vergelabsmedia.com/account under Licences.

Connect

1

Go to VergeLabs Library → Settings → Licence.

2

Paste the key, click Connect.

3

The screen shows your plan, sites used, and credits remaining.

One key can be active on as many sites as your plan allows. Move a site off the licence from the same screen or from your account.

Turn on AI features

Under VergeLabs Library → AI, in the tabs Describe, How it describes and Search.

AI features
Describe the backlog
Pick a category or the whole library, set a batch size, click Run. Runs in the background — close the tab if you like.
Plain-language search
Builds an index of your library. It costs no credits.
Duplicates
No credits needed, and no licence.

A run in progress has its own Stop button. If the plugin hits two fatal errors in an hour, safe mode switches on by itself.

What gets sent

Describing sends a resized copy of the image (long side 1024 px) with its filename, title and caption, so results match your wording; the image is analysed and discarded. Sorting into folders sends your folder names and what was written about your pictures, not the pictures again. Searching by meaning sends the phrase you type. Plan my folders sends labels and counts, never pictures, captions, file names or folder names. The plugin's readme lists every request and everything in it, endpoint by endpoint.

Details on the privacy page.

Limits

The service limits how fast credits can be spent, so a runaway import cannot spend your year's credits in an hour: 240 credits a minute, and 25,000 in a day or a quarter of your balance, whichever is higher. Folder planning is limited to 40 requests a day per site. These are not settings; there is nothing to change.

Disconnect

Licence → Disconnect. AI features turn off; the plugin keeps working; your existing alt text stays.

Docs · Credits

How credits work

1 credit = one picture read0 credits to search or find copiesNo overage prepaid and capped

What costs a credit

Describing an image (alt text, caption, tags) 1 credit
Proposing a folder structure 10 credits
Re-describing an image you already described 1 credit
Plan my folders (at least five described pictures) 30 + 15 per 100 labels
Profiling folders, past the first 100 1 per 6 folders

What doesn't

0

Duplicate detection, taxonomies, filters, everything in the free plugin. Searching by meaning, and the indexing behind it. Alt text from a description you already have. Re-filing, and talking to the folder planner.

0

Failed calls, and plans that are not shown. If our service errors, or a plan would not beat your folders, the credits come back.

Where credits come from

Yearly allowance

Every Pro plan includes 2,000 (one site), 5,000 (five sites) or 20,000 (Agency) credits a year. On renewal the same amount is added, and credits you have not used stay.

Extra packs

From {{ pRateFrom }} per credit, and cheaper the more you buy — 20,000 for {{ p20k }}. They never expire while your licence is active.

One balance Allowance and packs add up to one balance. Every action takes from it.

Limits

  • —The service limits spending to 240 credits a minute, and 25,000 a day or a quarter of your balance, whichever is higher. There is no setting for it.
  • —A run stops at zero. Nothing is lost, and pictures already described stay described.
  • —There is no overage. We can't charge you more than what you prepaid, because there's no way to do it on our side either.

Seeing your usage

VergeLabs Library → Settings → Licence shows credits left. Your account page shows usage across all sites, plus invoices.

Refunds

No questions asked, within 14 days of buying, credits already used deducted.

Plan my folders. On the Folders screen, one button builds a folder tree from what your pictures show. It costs 30 credits plus 15 per 100 distinct labels, the price is on the button, and it needs at least five described pictures.

New

Your tree grows for free. Once you confirm a tree, new pictures with new labels get new folders proposed at no charge.

New

A plan that isn't shown (it doesn't beat your folders, it doesn't arrive, or you confirm your tree while it runs) has its credits refunded, once per site every 30 days. A plan that fails on our side is always refunded.

New

The audience is asked, not guessed. When your pictures do not show whether they are for men, women or kids, the Tree step asks once before splitting folders that way.

Fixed

A licence with no free seat now says so. Saving or connecting one used to report success, and every AI request after it failed.

Changed

The known-problems list comes from the AI service instead of GitHub, and is fetched only when you press “Check for known problems”.

Changed

The plugin’s admin screens have new addresses, all starting vergeml-. Bookmarks to the old ones are sent on.

4.0.2 – 4.0.7
Patches
4.0.7

The plugin contacts nothing until you ask it to. No price is fetched on the AI screen, and the known-problems list is fetched only when you press the button.

4.0.6

Demo mode stays usable on a site without a licence. Code the original plugin kept for its paid edition is gone.

4.0.5

A site without a licence can try the AI free on 25 pictures, and sees what its own library would cost instead of an error.

4.0.4

While the AI service is away, pictures wait instead of being marked as failed. A re-describe that fails keeps the description the picture already had.

4.0.3

Screen Options opens over the folder panel on the media list, not under it.

4.0.2

Dragging into a folder works again beside FileBird, and Screen Options and Help open again beside the folder panel.

4.0.0 – 4.0.1
Folders
New

The Folders screen is a workflow: build a tree — paste it, click it out, or take it from your shop’s product categories — confirm it, fill it. Every step is a button with its credit cost printed on it.

New

Filing reads what a picture shows, with three honest answers: it fits, it is between two folders, or nothing fits. A picture you placed by hand is never moved, and the number before you press is the number that happens.

New

On a shop, one press turns product categories into folders and the products place their own pictures before anything is guessed at — 32 of 33 on a real shop.

New

Every picture says why it is where it is: the folder, the word that matched, the score, and the folder it could not beat.

Fixed

Six buttons that did nothing, the reset-filters crash on a fresh site, updates not reaching browsers that kept old scripts, folders with an & in the name, and the grid ignoring folders when Enhanced Media Library was still installed.

4.0.1

The support ticket no longer carries your licence key. A CSV cell starting with =, +, - or @ no longer opens as a formula. A PHP 8.4 deprecation notice on every AI request is gone.

Enhanced Media Library not working in WordPress 7? Here's the fix

5 minutes to fix€0 the free version fixes itNothing deleted your categories are WordPress terms
The short answer

Install VergeLabs Media Library, activate it, deactivate the old plugin. The free version fixes it — no purchase needed.

Migration guide

What's happening

Enhanced Media Library was last updated in July 2024 and tested up to WordPress 6.5. WordPress 7 changed the media library screens. The plugin's layout code no longer lines up: overlapping panels, filters that don't show, a sidebar covering files, and PHP 8 warnings in your logs. Its developer has not responded in the support forum since 2024, and the paid PRO version's update server has been down.

Nothing is wrong with your files. Your categories and taxonomies are WordPress terms; they're safe.

The fix

VergeLabs Media Library is a maintained fork of Enhanced Media Library. Same features, same settings, working on WordPress 7 and PHP 8. It copies your settings when you activate it.

1

Download VergeLabs Media Library 4.1.0 from this page (a zip) and upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. Searching for it under Add New works once the WordPress.org listing is live.

2

Activate it. Your Enhanced Media Library settings are copied automatically, and your categories are WordPress terms, so they are already there.

3

Deactivate Enhanced Media Library. Check your library. Delete the old plugin.

The free version fixes the WordPress 7 problem. No purchase needed.

If you'd rather patch the old plugin

We published a compatibility patch, 2.9.5-fix, on GitHub. It fixes the layout and PHP 8 issues and changes nothing else. It's a stop-gap; the old plugin won't get further updates from anyone, so migrating is the better move.

PRO customers

If you paid for Enhanced Media Library PRO, the fix above still applies. The PRO features (bulk categorise, gallery tools, category search) are in the free plugin, and old PRO customers get the first year of Pro, one site, for {{ pSwitch }}.

If you want the same thing, maintained

VergeLabs

VergeLabs Media Library is a fork of Enhanced Media Library. Same taxonomies, filters, bulk edit and ordering; your settings copied on activation. Fixed for WordPress 7 and PHP 8. Free.

Pro adds what the old plugin never had: AI alt text and captions written from what the picture shows, search by meaning, folder planning, and titles written from the descriptions. The duplicate finder is in the free plugin. Prepaid credits. From {{ pSingle }} a year, {{ pSwitch }} for the first year of Pro, one site, if you owned the old PRO.

Best for: everyone who liked Enhanced Media Library and doesn't want to redo their library.

If you want folders instead of categories

FileBird, Real Media Library, HappyFiles and WP Media Folder give you a folder tree in the sidebar. They're a different model: a file lives in one folder; with taxonomies a file can be in several categories. Moving from Enhanced Media Library to a folder plugin means rebuilding your organisation from scratch, and Enhanced Media Library's own docs recommend against running both.

Best for: sites that think in folders and don't need multi-category tagging.

If you only need alt text

AltText.ai, AutoAlt.ai, Alt Magic and similar tools write alt text and stop there. They don't organise your library.

Best for: sites that already have organisation sorted and only want accessibility and image SEO.

Migration without rebuilding

Install VergeLabs Media Library, activate it, deactivate the old plugin. Nothing in your library is deleted at any point.

Alternative

Leave Enhanced Media Library and keep your folders

Enhanced Media Library's last release was 2.9.4, in July 2024, and it is tested up to WordPress 6.5. On WordPress 7 its media toolbar breaks: the extra filters stack into one tall block and the author filter overlaps the type filter. VergeLabs Media Library is a maintained fork of it, and fixes both.

What moving takes

Your settings are copied. Activating VergeLabs Media Library copies your Enhanced Media Library settings: taxonomies and their options, library and filter options, custom MIME types, ordering and gallery options. The old plugin's own options are left as they were, so you can go back.

Your files do not move. Enhanced Media Library filed them under the same media_category taxonomy, so every folder assignment is already in place.

Then remove the old plugin. Deactivate Enhanced Media Library, activate VergeLabs Media Library, click through your library once, then delete the old one. If you install ours first, your site keeps working; you see each taxonomy twice until you deactivate the old plugin.

The full steps are in the install guide.

Troubleshooting

Enhanced Media Library not working on WordPress 7? The fix

On WordPress 7, the Enhanced Media Library media toolbar breaks: its extra filters stack into one tall block, and the author filter draws on top of the type filter. VergeLabs Media Library is a maintained fork of it that fixes both. Install it, deactivate the old plugin, and the toolbar is one row again.

Free to installSettings copied when you activate itNothing deleted your folders are WordPress terms

What breaks

The filters stack. WordPress 7.0 turned the media toolbar into a fixed two-column grid and gave a place to its own two filters only. The extra filters Enhanced Media Library adds had nowhere to go, so they stack into a block about 300 pixels tall, with every label above the wrong control.

The author filter overlaps the type filter. The two share one HTML id. That did not matter until WordPress began placing elements by id.

PHP 8 warnings. Four settings handlers read their nonce field before checking it was there, and four get_terms() calls still used an argument order deprecated in WordPress 4.5.

The fix

The toolbar is one row again. VergeLabs Media Library lays it out as one row however many filters you turn on, and gives the author filter the id its own label already pointed at.

Your settings are copied. Activating VergeLabs Media Library copies your Enhanced Media Library settings. The old plugin's own options are left as they were, so you can go back.

Your files do not move. Enhanced Media Library filed them under the same media_category taxonomy, so every category and folder assignment is already in place.

Then remove the old plugin. Deactivate Enhanced Media Library, activate VergeLabs Media Library, click through your library once, then delete the old one. If you install ours first, your site keeps working; you see each taxonomy twice until you deactivate the old plugin.

The full steps are in the install guide.

Questions

Is my media library damaged?

No. The toolbar problem is about layout. Your files and categories are untouched, and categories are ordinary WordPress terms.

Which WordPress versions does the fix cover?

VergeLabs Media Library works with WordPress 6.5 to 7.1 and PHP 7.4 to 8.5.

Do I have to pay to get the fix?

No. The toolbar, the folders and the filters are in the free plugin. The AI features run on credits and are optional.

Background

Is Enhanced Media Library abandoned?

Here is what is publicly true: Enhanced Media Library's last release was 2.9.4, in July 2024, and it is tested up to WordPress 6.5. Whether that counts as abandoned is your call. VergeLabs Media Library is a maintained fork of it, not affiliated with wpUXsolutions, and its current release is 4.1.0.

What is public

The last release. Enhanced Media Library 2.9.4, July 2024.

The tested range. Tested up to WordPress 6.5. On WordPress 7.0 its media toolbar stacks its extra filters into one tall block and the author filter overlaps the type filter.

What we cannot tell you. Why there has been no release since, or whether one is coming. That is for wpUXsolutions to say.

What VergeLabs is

A maintained fork. VergeLabs Media Library started as a fork of Enhanced Media Library 2.9.4 and keeps what that plugin did: media categories and taxonomies, filters, MIME types and dynamic galleries. It is GPLv2 or later, as the original is.

Not affiliated. It is not made by, or affiliated with, wpUXsolutions.

Current. Version 4.1.0, for WordPress 6.5 to 7.1 and PHP 7.4 to 8.5. The source and the issue tracker are on GitHub.

Questions

Is VergeLabs Media Library affiliated with wpUXsolutions?

No. It is a fork of Enhanced Media Library 2.9.4, released under GPLv2 or later as the original is, and it is not made by wpUXsolutions.

Will my folders survive a move?

Yes. Enhanced Media Library filed your files under the media_category taxonomy, which VergeLabs Media Library uses too, so every assignment is already in place. Activating it also copies your Enhanced Media Library settings.

Does moving cost anything?

No. The plugin is free. The AI features run on credits and are optional.

FileBird alternative: folders that are WordPress terms

If you are looking for a FileBird alternative, this is how VergeLabs Media Library works: a file can sit in more than one folder, and your folders are ordinary WordPress terms, so they are still there if you remove the plugin. It is free, and it imports folders from other folder plugins, FileBird among them, and from CSV.

Free folder tree, no accountSeveral folders for one fileFolders stay if you remove the plugin

How folders work here

A file can be in more than one folder. Dragging a file moves it, as on your desktop. Hold Ctrl while dropping and it is added to that folder as well: the same photo in Products and in Autumn Campaign, without a second copy of it. A setting makes every drop a move if you want one folder per file.

Folders are WordPress terms. Folder structure is not kept in a table of ours. Folders are ordinary media categories (the media_category taxonomy), so WordPress, your theme, WP-CLI and other plugins can read them, and they stay intact if you remove the plugin.

Folders can be galleries. A block, an Elementor, Divi or WPBakery element, or the [vergeml_gallery] shortcode shows a folder, and new images in it appear on every page that uses it.

Moving from FileBird

Import with a preview. Import folders reads other folder plugins, FileBird among them, and CSV. It shows what it will do first, says which folders will merge with ones you already have, and the whole import can be undone from the same screen.

Nothing is taken from the other plugin. It keeps everything as it was, so you can go back. Running two folder plugins at once is not recommended; bring the folders across, then deactivate the other plugin.

Questions

It is free. Import folders reads other folder plugins, WP Media Folder among them, and CSV.

Free folder tree, no accountSeveral folders for one fileFolders stay if you remove the plugin

How folders work here

One file, more than one folder. Dragging a file moves it. Hold Ctrl while dropping and it is added to that folder as well: the same photo in Products and in Autumn Campaign, without a second copy.

Moving from WP Media Folder

Import with a preview. Import folders reads other folder plugins, WP Media Folder among them, and CSV.

What this page covers. It describes VergeLabs Media Library only. For WP Media Folder's own features and pricing, see WP Media Folder's documentation.

Questions

Can I import my WP Media Folder folders?

Yes, under Import folders. You see a preview first, and the import can be undone. WP Media Folder is left as it was.

Can one picture be in two folders?

Yes. Hold Ctrl while dropping a file and it is added to the second folder. Without Ctrl, a drop moves it.

Does the folder tree need a licence?

No. The folder tree, the five smart folders, the folder gallery and the duplicate finder are free, with no licence and no service.

Alt text

AltText.ai alternative: alt text at 1 credit a picture

If you are looking for an AltText.ai alternative, this is how VergeLabs Media Library describes pictures: 1 credit a picture, 25 free credits to try, and only empty alt text is filled, so alt text you have already written stays. A run starts when you start it, and you can stop it. The plugin is also your media library: folders are free.

1 credit a picture25 credits free to tryExisting alt text is kept

How describing works here

It describes what the picture shows. Alt text and captions are written from what the picture shows and, with Page context on, the page it is on. The title and caption come with the same credit.

It fills the empty ones. Only empty alt text is filled; existing alt text stays.

You start it. A run begins when you start it and can be stopped. Nothing is described on its own in the background.

You can count the gap. The Missing alt text smart folder, free in the plugin, lists the pictures that still have none.

What it costs, and what else is in the plugin

1 credit a picture. 1,000 pictures is 1,000 credits. Credits come in packs, or with Pro: Pro, one site, includes 2,000 credits a year. See pricing.

25 free credits. Every site can try it on 25 pictures, without a card.

Folders, free. A drag-and-drop folder tree and five smart folders, kept as ordinary WordPress terms that stay if you remove the plugin.

Questions

Does it describe pictures automatically when I upload them?

No. It runs when you start it, one run at a time.

Will it overwrite alt text I wrote?

No. Only empty alt text is filled; existing alt text stays.

What would 1,000 pictures cost?

1,000 credits, at 1 credit a picture. The free trial is 25 credits, and Pro, one site, includes 2,000 credits a year.

Fix

WordPress media library broken after an update

If the media library toolbar looks wrong after updating to WordPress 7 and you use Enhanced Media Library, you may be seeing what VergeLabs Media Library 4.1.0 fixes: the extra toolbar filters stack into a block about 300 pixels tall, with labels above the wrong control, and the author filter overlaps the type filter. The fork works with WordPress 6.5 to 7.1 and PHP 7.4 to 8.5, and it is free.

One row for the toolbar filtersFolders kept when you switchFree no licence needed

What 4.1.0 fixes

The toolbar filters. The fork lays the filters out in one row, and gives the author filter its own id so it no longer draws on top of the type filter.

PHP 8 warnings. It removes PHP 8 warnings in the settings handlers.

Deprecated calls. It removes deprecated get_terms() calls.

Switching without losing anything

Your categories are already there. VergeLabs Media Library uses the same media_category taxonomy as Enhanced Media Library, so the categories and folder assignments it made are in place after switching.

Your settings are copied. Activating VergeLabs Media Library copies your Enhanced Media Library settings automatically.

If something still looks off. Safe mode switches on by itself after two fatal errors in an hour. Under Settings → Media Utilities there is a System report you can send to support with a screenshot.

What this page covers. VergeLabs Media Library is a maintained fork of Enhanced Media Library, not affiliated with wpUXsolutions.

Questions

Will I lose my folders if I switch?

Does it work on WordPress 7?

Yes. 4.1.0 works with WordPress 6.5 to 7.1 and PHP 7.4 to 8.5.

What if the media library still breaks?
